June: How will your work this year move your BARWE group towards being more engaged locally and beyond to stand up for those fighting for justice?

June Essential Question: How will your work this year move your BARWE group towards being more engaged locally and beyond to stand up for those fighting for justice?

A Special Message from the BARWE Core: Last year, we concluded our discussion series with a call for donations to support the continued operations of BARWE. As a result of this ask, we received $1785.00 in donations from individuals and organizations that use and support BARWE’s work. We are deeply grateful to the people who have materially invested in our work! In an effort to cut our operating costs, we also migrated our e-mail list support from MailChimp to Brevo, a move which will save us about $900.00 per year. Going forward, BARWE resources will remain free as always, but producing the series does have annual costs.

The current annual cost of maintaining BARWE is $1,620.81.

While we plan to continue learning, working, and sharing with the BARWE community, we once again are posting this as a request for donations. Any donation you make goes directly to paying our monthly Brevo, Weebly/Square, and Zoom account costs, as well as paying our accountability partners to review our materials.

Brevo - $442.60 annually
Zoom - $172.69
Weebly - $155.52
Accountability - $70/person/month (about $850 a year)
TOTAL = $1,620.81

If you have the means and have found BARWE materials helpful in your journey, consider supporting the future of BARWE by making a donation today. You can submit donations to BARWE through CashApp/Venmo/Paypal at (CashApp: $barwe215, Venmo: @John-MacElveen, Paypal: [email protected]). If you would prefer to send a paper check through the mail, we are able to receive those at the following address: BARWE, PO Box 313, Liberty, ME, 04949.

Looking Back: As the BARWE core gathered to brainstorm ideas and shape this year’s inquiry series, we found ourselves reflecting on the ways in which educators’ energies are being directed in current struggles facing our communities. We talked through the similarities and differences between the surges in care, resistance, and rebellion during 2020 and 2025 and what they might mean for folks that are both returning to the fight, and those feeling driven to stand alongside their friends and colleagues for the first time. We decided to call back to some of our favorite and most salient resources from the past with the desire that we feel the ways that these conversations are ongoing, connected, and iterative.

Looking Forward: We are planning on spending the next year pursuing questions about the future of antiracist education. What is one question that you are interested in exploring? In exchange for your thoughtful submission, we are offering to send you some BARWE stickers!

Overview: As you close out the school year, we encourage folks to have a BARWE meeting with your school or organizational group to reflect on your work this year. As you close out the year, we’re asking you to look back, as well as to look forward. Instead of having a resource to discuss, we invite you to reflect on your work together using our guiding questions.

Discussion Questions:
  1. How will your work this year move your BARWE group towards being more engaged locally and beyond to stand up for those fighting for justice?
  2. What clear practices and strategies will now be included in our collective and individual practices?
  3. What concrete steps can you take this summer to strengthen your connection with your anti-racist community? Who are the people that you work with to make this fight sustainable and impactful?

Facilitation Reference Guide:
  • Set a day and time for your group to meet - This may need to change if your school or district is cutting back on “DEI.” Get creative by meeting off campus or on zoom. Make sure to send reminders. If you’re meeting in person, snacks are always a good idea!
  • Send this month’s discussion questions to your group.
  • Prepare yourself to facilitate by reading through our Norms and Discussion Protocol.
  • When you start your meeting, read the room. What grounding does your group need? A breathing exercise? A sing-along? A dance break? A group scream? Build in a moment for that.

Feedback Form:
As mentioned above, we are interested in hearing what questions you are wondering about when it comes to the future of anti-racist education. Please fill out our feedback form to let us know what’s on your mind! We’d love to send you some BARWE stickers for your thoughts. Don’t forget to add your address so we can send them along.

Pass The Hat:
In a departure from our normal pass-the-hat suggestions, we are hoping that some of you will choose to donate to the continued operations of BARWE this month.
