We want teachers to be prepared to continue teaching and discussing race in their schools and communities this upcoming school year, as well as ready to support and defend the choices they make for their classrooms.

So we invite you (and your colleagues and friends!) to join us this summer in reading and meeting to discuss Matt Kay’s Not Light, But Fire (secondary grade focus) and We’re Gonna Keep on Talking (with Jen Orr, features a primary focus). We encourage participants to choose either book depending on their teaching context. Our first meeting will focus broadly on part I of the texts: The Ecosystem.

We are excited to offer two ways to get involved:

Philadelphia area in-person meetings - 7/14 & 7/28
  • The in-person meetings will be Mondays, July 14th and 28th from 5:00-6:15 PM ET at the Independence Branch of the Philadelphia Free Library. Those interest in joining our Philly discussion can register here by selecting “Not Light, But Fire” from the book list!
Virtual Zoom meetings - 7/7 & 7/21
  • As an alternative, our book club will also meet on Zoom on Mondays, July 7th and 21st from 7:00-8:00 PM ET. Those interested in participating virtually may register here!

Save the Date!  Author Matt Kay will join us for an online BARWE event on the evening of Monday, August 4. Stay tuned for more details and registration link coming soon!
