For our first two years as an organization, we did not seek to raise any funds. We instead prioritized encouraging “Pass the Hat” donations led by Black, Brown, Indigenous, and Asian folx. This is something that we still do every month, and at our events.
As we have grown as an organization, we began to need to pay for our emails, website, and this year a Zoom account. For that reason, we applied for the Teaching Tolerance (now Learning for Justice) grant last Spring.
We also were able to develop an accountability partnership with the Melanated Educators Collective, where we pay Black educators from their organization to provide input on our materials and the direction of our organization. In addition, we have compensated Black, Brown, Indigenous, Asian, and Youth speakers and panelists at our events over the past year, and will continue to do so.
In an effort to sustain our organization financially, we are asking for donations to attend our Summer Series. If we raise enough money through this event to sustain ourselves for the year, we will not be doing any additional fundraising.
We look forward to directing any money we raise to expanding our accountability partnership and hosting more events where we bring in speakers and panelists to share their perspectives. We do not currently have any paid staff, and do not intend to pay any of the white folks involved in BARWE Core or Advisory Group for our work.
Over the summer, we will share details about the funds we raised and how we plan to use them.
